Ethics And The Ethical Change Essay - 2190 Words

As individual consumers, we have little power to affect change in business, however, when grouped together we become a much more powerful tool in effecting ethical change. This essay will firstly assess ethics in relation to academic theories, secondly assess changing consumption by the consumer and finally, discuss the consumer protection Governments have put in place. Defining Ethics â€Å"The study of what is morally right and wrong, or a set of beliefs about what is morally right and wrong†. (Cambridge University Press 2008) There have been a number of attempts by writers to try and distinguish what they believe to be a suitable definition of ethics. The Cassell dictionary defines ethics as â€Å"Science of Morals† (Brown 1997). In understanding the above we need to attempt to define morals- â€Å"conforming to, or regulated by what is right† (Brown 1997). This idea of right and wrong is I would say a moving scale as attitudes change depending on the said action, therefore morals views are never black and white. In an attempt to solve ethical problems academics attempted to come up with a series of theories. These theories are known as normative theories defined as â€Å"the rule and principle that determine the right and wrong of a given situation† (Brown 1997). There are two main types of normative theory as seen in Figure 1.
