As individual consumers, we have little power to affect change in business, however, when grouped together we become a much more powerful tool in effecting ethical change. This essay will firstly assess ethics in relation to academic theories, secondly assess changing consumption by the consumer and finally, discuss the consumer protection Governments have put in place. Defining Ethics ââ¬Å"The study of what is morally right and wrong, or a set of beliefs about what is morally right and wrongâ⬠. (Cambridge University Press 2008) There have been a number of attempts by writers to try and distinguish what they believe to be a suitable definition of ethics. The Cassell dictionary defines ethics as ââ¬Å"Science of Moralsâ⬠(Brown 1997). In understanding the above we need to attempt to define morals- ââ¬Å"conforming to, or regulated by what is rightâ⬠(Brown 1997). This idea of right and wrong is I would say a moving scale as attitudes change depending on the said action, therefore morals views are never black and white. In an attempt to solve ethical problems academics attempted to come up with a series of theories. These theories are known as normative theories defined as ââ¬Å"the rule and principle that determine the right and wrong of a given situationâ⬠(Brown 1997). There are two main types of normative theory as seen in Figure 1. Consequentialist theories look at the approach in which an act is judged by the ââ¬Å"moral rightness and isâ⬠¦ determined solely by the goodness of the actââ¬â¢sShow MoreRelatedThe Changing Of The Guard : The New Face Of It Ethics1522 Words à |à 7 PagesIT Ethics in Younger Generations In America Ask anyone what ethics means and the number of different answers will likely equal the number of different people that were asked. They say hindsight is 20/20 but many historians look back at the Civil War and see the event so differently from one another. These disagreements stem from variances in opinions as to what the cause of the Civil War was in the first place. Viewpoints certainly vary on all topics related to the Civil War but none so tempestuous as Lincolnââ¬â¢s military actions to stop the secession of the South. To the Confederacy, the Civil War was primarily about statesââ¬â¢ rights, centered on the issue of slavery. From the viewpoint of the North, the Civil War was primarily about the unconstitutional action of succession and the outrageous, aggressive actions at Fort Sumter. Although some may see Lincoln as a tyrannical leader, the ends certainly justified the means. At the surrender by the Confederacy at Appomattox Court House the country was once again whole, slavery had been abolished, and the Federal Government was empowered. Federalism is the idea that no branch becomes too powerful, whether it be at the local, state, or federal level. Ultimately Federal Law takes precedent. This became a problem when the government put tariffs on the imports from Europe which drove the prices up on goods that the South needed. The North was also putting tax pressure on the cotton that the South was producing. The South felt that they were being put in a position where they couldnââ¬â¢t win. The Definition of Cost and the Difference Between Absorption Costing vs. Variable Costing Essay Example
The Definition of Cost and the Difference Between Absorption Costing vs. Variable Costing Essay In this document I am going to explain the definition of cost and the difference between absorption costing vs. variable costing, and also if overproducing is an ethical practice or not. Also I will be showing some calculations and data to explain a get a better idea of this entire situation and how we can resolve some problems in management accountant. Cost is the monetary value of goods and services expended to obtain current or future benefits. The way that a cost will be used defines the way it should be computed. When we talk about cost we need to be specific about what we are talking about. (Atkinson, 2007) Absorption costing means that the manufactured costs are absorbed by the units produced, also it can be known by full costing because is the costing of a finished unit in inventory. It treats all costs of production as production costs regardless if they are fixed or variable; direct materials, direct labor and variable and fixed overhead. (Accounting for management, 2010) Variable costing is a costing system under which those costs of production that vary with output are treated as product costs. This would usually include direct materials, direct labor and variable portion of manufacturing overhead. (Accounting for management, 2010) Variable costing is often useful for managementââ¬â¢s decision-making. However, absorption costing is required for external financial reporting and for income tax reporting. (Averkamp, 2010) Not matter the costing method that we use, either in the absorption or variable costing the variable and fixed selling and administrative expenses are treated as period costs and are deducted from revenues as incurred. Now, do I think that overproducing is an ethical practice, well it depends for whom? When the stakeholders do investments they look the income statement. If this is high or goes up they will be ok with the decision but if they need to pay for something like the expenses they might think that the company is hiding some information and they will be disappointed, in other words, they will think that this is not an ethical action because they can be lying. Now I am going to present the calculations required for this project. Plague Disease Myths Plague refers to a disease spread by fleas which are infected by their hosts, in most cases rats. The fleas used to change host especially after the death of the rat, and the next host they preferred may have been human being. During that process, they infected humans.Advertising We will write a custom critical writing sample on Plague Disease Myths specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Plague was first experienced in Europe in the mid of the fourteenth century when the first wave of the infection killed about twenty five million people. The infection continued spreading throughout Europe in the eighteenth century, and at that time the cause of the bacterial infection had not been ascertained yet. Upon infection, an individual experienced severe pain, and in a few days eighty percent of the infected people succumbed to death. In one school, the plague killed twenty boys almost simultaneously. This caused other students to stay away from sc hool as they opted not to attend it (Schoolmaster 1484). Considering the case in England, the plague was caused by filth in the streets and the sputum and dogââ¬â¢s urine which clogged the rushes on the floor of houses (Erasmus 1512). The rich in the society managed to flee from the country, and as a result, the poor were the ones who were left vulnerable to the disease. This also happened in Paris where only a few porters and wage earners who resided there were left (Versoris 1523). Johann Weyer wrote in his The Deceptions of Demons in 1583 that individuals also spread the deadly plague by smearing the gates to the city of Casale in Western Lombardy with a certain ointment that caused the disease. Thus, everyone who touched those gates was infected, and as a result died. Unfortunately, the heirs of the deceased are the ones who made payments for the gates to be smeared so that they would have obtained a quick inheritance. This was the case at Casale where it was reported that pe ople got infected by simply touching the gates (Weyer 1583). Each and every household which was affected by the pestilence was immediately quarantined, and in the event of that persons death in a specific place, the one had to be buried in that particular place. Furthermore, many people died because of hunger since the roads were under heavy guard to ensure that no infected individuals travelled from one place to another. In addition, the gallows were also used to frighten other people, and bonfires were used to eliminate the infected (Motto 1576). A particular woman whose husband had a fever was sure he would have died, but he was miraculously healed. He was fed by a piece of bread that had touched St. Domenicaââ¬â¢s body. The bread was sent to him by Angelica. (Centennni 1624). An individual really thought a lot about what would have happened in the event their household would have been invaded by the plagues. It was a tough time as everyone wondered who they would lose first to the disease, the daughter first or the son. It also happened that after the son had died, the daughter followed, and eventually the individual died as well. Even in the season of severity, an individual would still have compassion and be charitable. Convalescents and servants of two pest houses were fed by a particular individual who also paid guards and gravediggers with alms sent to him/her by the lordships (Dragoni 1630). The infected patients hung toads on their neckline so that their venom would draw out the poison of the disease within a few days (Roachas 1647). In Barcelona, there was a high demand for nurses who although called to serve neglected the pat ients in many instances and made them die quickly so that they could collect the agreed fee (Parets 1651). News was received that in Rome Italy it was now violent. People opted to refrain but four individuals opted to believe in providence rather than not see a fine place (Reresby 1656). People feared to buy wigs with the assumption that the wings were obtained from the heads of people who died of the plague (Pepys 1665). The European nations including France, Holland, Spain and Italy prohibited ships from England. As a consequence, foreign trade and manufacture of goods declined causing a stoppage (Defoe 1665). The plague was believed to be a punishment from the gods due to the sins of the people and remedies were not considered to be available like in the case of ordinary maladies (Bertrand 1720). The events happened from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century affected the whole of Europe (Clark Rawcliffe 2013). Many people lost their lives as a result of being infected by the p lague, and in general the society became inhumane (Crawshaw 2012). People stopped caring for each other and valued money more than human life. This period was one of the darkest periods in European history, and also one of the events that later led to intensive research in medicine until a cure was discovered. Stakeholder analysis and engagement in Management and planning for competing interests in Great Barrier Reef - Essay Example I have also talked to representatives of the stakeholders who all practically agreed to all the engagement techniques that you have been adopting. It might be exhilarating to know that most of them find the seminars, discussions, workshops and consultations that you have been conducting worthwhile because these produced in such stakeholders a renewed, reinvigorated determination to protect mother nature and that starts with the preservation of the Great Barrier Reef. The subject matter of the Great Barrier Reef immediately calls to mind the problem of climate change that has been bedeviling the whole world. This has caused immeasurable alarm to every nation on earth because if left unabated, it will signal the extinction of this planet. Problems of management and planning of the Great Barrier Reef by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA), to whom the whole paper is addressed to, are but of secondary and minor importance. Because the problem of a steady rise in water temperature in the Great Barrier Reef can certainly cause bleaching and ultimately death of the coral reefs and thus ecological imbalance among the flora and fauna that take refuge in such reefs, and because such problems of man destroying the coral reefs through fishing through dynamiting, use of toxic chemicals that poison reef fishes and land erosion runoff, muro ami fishing among others, there is the urgency of identifying all stakeholders and finding means or techniques of making them all a part of the solution solvers to these pressing problems. Most of the techniques used to brainwash these stakeholders to make them identify with the problems of the Great Barrier Reef and cause them to consider such problems as their own and thus help the with its aims and objectives, have already been utilised by GBRMPA. This paper hopefully reinforces and supplements what GBRMPA has been doing. This paper then concludes to declare that GBRMPA is certainly treading the right path to the right direction and wishes GBRMPA to widen its scope of stakeholders that it must share the onus to, now that this paper has identified and clarified all the stakeholders that should share the burden of the problem
